Males Vs. Female Rats
One of the most common questions we receive at our rattery is whether new rat owners should adopt males or females. The guide below will go over the key differences to help you decide which might be the best fit for your home.
Battle of the Sexes
When deciding between male and female rats, it’s helpful to understand their differences in behavior, physical traits, and care needs to determine which might be the best fit for you. While individual personalities can vary, there are some general trends that can guide your decision.
Male Rats:
Larger in size and more laid-back, often referred to as "lap rats."
Tend to enjoy lounging, snuggling, and spending quiet time with their owners.
Produce "buck grease," an oily substance on their skin
Their fur typically has a denser, coarser feel.
Rex males are often curlier than females.
More likely to scent mark (dribbling small amounts of urine), though not all males do this.
Less likely to climb or explore as they age.
Have large, visible reproductive parts.
While some claim males have a stronger odor, we haven't noticed a significant difference. Most of the perceived difference comes from their larger size, which results in larger feces.
Female Rats:
Smaller in size and highly energetic, with a love for climbing and exploring.
Curious and playful, making them ideal for interactive and enrichment-focused owners.
Typically have softer, silkier coats compared to males.
Often more motivated to learn tricks and seek attention from their humans.
More adventurous and active, though just as affectionate as males in their own way.
In my experience, females are faster to litter train than males.
Other Considerations:
Additionally, neutering male rats is a simple and affordable procedure that can help reduce scent marking, buck grease, and the size of their reproductive parts. Spaying females is less common due to the complexity and cost of the procedure.
Ultimately, the choice between male and female rats comes down to your personal preference and the type of companion you’re looking for. Both males and females make wonderful pets with loving and distinct personalities. No matter which you choose, you can be sure that your new rats will bring joy, companionship, and entertainment into your life!
